Disturb Us, Lord

......

Do you know the history of Sir Francis Drake? He is most well known as a daring English privateer and for helping to lead English fleets to victory against the great Spanish Armada in 1588. I recently came across this inspiring jewel which he wrote in 1577, and had to share it – really, really good thoughts.

(Oh, and by the way, I began blogging here one year ago today! Thank you for reading! :o)

……

Disturb us, Lord, when we are
Too well pleased with ourselves,
When our dreams have come true
Because we have dreamed too little,
When we arrived safely
Because we sailed too close to the shore.

Disturb us, Lord, when
With the abundance of things we possess
We have lost our thirst
For the waters of life;
Having fallen in love with life,
We have ceased to dream of eternity
And in our efforts to build a new earth,
We have allowed our vision
Of the new heaven to dim.

Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly,
To venture on wider seas
Where storms will show Your mastery;
Where losing sight of land,
We shall find the stars.
We ask You to push back
The horizons of our hopes;
And to push into the future
In strength, courage, hope, and love.

  3. :-) I did not know the history of Sir Francis Drake. The quote reminded me of Deut 6:10-12 :-) "....houses full of all good things, which you did not fill, hewn-out wells which you did not dig, vineyards and olive trees which you did not plant—when you have eaten and are full—
    Deu 6:12 then beware, lest you forget the LORD who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage..." I am glad you started this blog too :-)
